Margie Boone has been a part of the convenience store industry all her life, beginning at the young age of 13 working in small mom & pop shops. Over the last five decades, Margie has steadily advanced her career to taking on management of various Ultramar sites. These days Margie can be found managing Kenmount Corner Store in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
What is Margie’s secret to a successful and happy career in the convenience store industry?
“It’s the people” says Margie. “One of the things I enjoy most is meeting and chatting with customers and working closely my staff. I love it, I love my job!”
Even with all Margie’s day to day responsibilities, she still manages to make time for giving back to her community. “I participate in the Run for the Cure every October. We lost a co-manager to breast cancer, so each year we all come together to form Team Olive Parsons.” In addition to the Run for the Cure, Margie has participated in the Make a Wish Foundation and regularly helps fundraise for various school sports teams, including basketball which her two grandchildren participate in.
Over the years, Margie has seen some very drastic changes to the convenience store industry. The biggest being customer expectations growing and evolving. Margie believes that offering a wide variety of products can help to meet these growing demands. Another impactful change to her industry has been technology. In her first days working at convenience stores, there was no cash register, but simply a change box. “In today’s world, we have more people paying at the pumps, printing phone cards for customers, and using various other technologies to deliver their products,” says Margie.
